This was my final project for college! I worked with a small team of 3 programmers, two other in class artists, a friend who helped with splash art, and another friend who worked on audio. I made the initial concept, worked as head artist, worked on modeling, textures, animation, concept art, and some technical art aspects. It was my job as lead to help keep everyone on track. Through the project I learned a lot about game art, working quickly on games, and team management. We used a SCRUM / Agile management style for our game. Programs we used included Unity, Substance Design/Painter, Photoshop, and Maya.
We had about 2 months to work on a prototype of our project. After that we showed off what we had made in that time at iFest and got a lot of valuable feedback.
What inspired the game for me was thinking of the popularity of mobile games and what would work from a business standpoint for a casual game. I thought a lot about what I did and didn’t like with mobile games and what did and didn’t work with them. Ideally, if this was fully complete, it would be a free to play game that would rely on optional ads that reward the player extra coins (similar to Clicker Hero’s gems for ads). There would also be the option to purchase more plays, but it would not be required. Money would be gathered in game by the happiness of the town you build. Happiness would be determined by matching specific gachapons to each other and letting them interact overtime. However we did not have time to implement an AI system so as it is you can build up a town, but characters will not wander.
In terms of themes I was heavily inspired by gachapons, mobile games such as Clicker Hero and Neko Atsume. I was also heavily inspired by small sim like games such as Sim City and Animal Crossing.
Not sure how much I should say about what all was planned in case I continue to pick this up again in the future.
-----------
HOW TO PLAY:Gachatown is a casual collection game so it does not focus on learning too much, but here’s the main screens you should know:
MACHINE SCREENS-
Pick a themed machine, select play on the machine you want, insert a coin, drag the turn, and select the capsule to open it.
COLLECTION SCREENS-
In this version everything is unlocked already, but this displays gachapons in their sets. You can select them to interact with a gacha and watch an animation associated with it.
TOWN-
Drag gachapons from your collection onto a plot of land where you can arrange a small town. Selecting a gachapon activates an animation and camera associated with it.
Current bugs and incompetence things I know of off the top of my head include the camera in the town scene sometimes being stuck, some animations not playing, and a few missing particle effects. AI is not yet implemented. You won’t have to worry about getting more money in this build.
Please let me know what you think! I know that this build isn’t completely done but my team and I really did put our hearts into this and I’m so proud of how much we did in such a short time span. Thank you so much for taking a look and let me know if you encounter any problems installing the APK file so that I can help out.
